Employment Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in joining our growing school.
The New Amsterdam School is a dynamic young school located in Manhattan’s East Village, offering Waldorf education to urban families. We are members of a large community garden nearby where the children can explore, garden, and play daily. Our enthusiastic parent body is active and very committed to the school. Our supportive and diverse faculty is committed to Waldorf education, Anthroposophical study, and a collaborative work environment. New Amsterdam is a member of WECAN and beginning the process of becoming a developing member of AWSNA.

First Grade Teacher for 2018-19

The New Amsterdam School of New York City is seeking a a first grade class teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. The ideal candidate will have a Waldorf certificate and teaching experience. However, we are open to considering candidates who are still in training who have the recommendation of their training program. In addition to effective teaching skills and love for the children and their families, it is important to us that our new colleague have enthusiasm, a sense of humor, and a strong interest in actively building our school.

We began ten years ago with parent-child classes and gradually added nursery and kindergarten classes. Then, with strong parent support, we added a first grade. Next year, we will add a third grade. Our plan is to continue adding one grade per year, maintaining small, mixed-grade classes. Japanese, Spanish, eurythmy, handwork, and music are offered to our elementary school students, and we are fortunate to have many large community gardens and one public park located within a few blocks of our campus, making outdoor excursions a daily experience. We have an especially beautiful classroom space, and our parents describe New Amsterdam as an “oasis” in the city. We are a member of WECAN and will begin our work to become an Associate Member of AWSNA in the spring.

Our school is located in Manhattan in the East Village, a unique and historical neighborhood. We have a vibrant and diverse faculty and parent community: our families and faculty speak over 14 different languages! The New Amsterdam community is committed to being a welcoming school to as diverse a population as possible, and to that end, through our SEE: Socially Equitable Education initiative, next year we will offer four scholarships in the first through third grades that cover 99% of a neighborhood student’s tuition and fees.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our growing school and to help shape the future of our programs and school culture. For a view into New Amsterdam, watch our new video, which can be found on our home page.
