Our Philosophy
New Amsterdam School’s Six Pillars of Learning
New Amsterdam School is a modern, innovative, and academically-rigorous Waldorf School. We pride ourselves in having established a discerning Waldorf curriculum that is is grounded in 100 years of Waldorf education. We combine traditional elements with unique programming for our complex urban environment. From nursery to our fully outdoor kindergarten, each of our programs is intentionally designed to nurture a connection to nature, connection to the community, and connection to self. We are devoted to helping our students develop into well-rounded individuals. Our unique curriculum is anchored in our Six Pillars of Learning:
Solid Social-Emotional Foundation
Our teachers focus on building long-term relationships, staying with their class for multiple years. Not only does this allow the teacher to appreciate a deep understanding of each student’s gifts, but it also creates a respectful classroom environment. Daily activities within the classroom also help develop strong Emotional Intelligence and promote care, respect, and kindness.
Engaging Academics
Our curriculum develops important pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills so that when academics are introduced in the first grade, children are equipped with a strong learning foundation.
Multi-Disciplinary Artistic Experiences
Our curriculum incorporates drawing, painting, color studies, weaving, knitting, sculpting and modeling, sewing, drama, and vocal and musical instruction.
True Diversity
Linguistic, racial, ethnic, socio-economic, gender, and nation of origin diversity amongst our students, faculty, and parents truly reflects our city and our values. Over 14 languages are spoken amongst our community.
Immersion in Nature
Our partnership with NYC’s largest community garden allows us to integrate a fully outdoor classroom into our early childhood grades. Our older grades enjoy extended outdoor learning, nature-based studies, and multiple daily recesses in our garden and city greenspace. Building this true connection to nature provides our students with a grounded learning experience that supports their sense of self and connectedness within the ecological world. It is a true antidote to our daily experience of living in a dense metropolitan center.
Community
As a close-knit community, New Amsterdam attracts faculty and families who are committed to the shared values of respect, empathy, kindness, and collaboration. Parents give generously of their time and talents, working together to co-create the life of the school in partnership with teachers and staff. The community comes together through an array of opportunities, including parent education evenings, class field trips, and celebrations of seasonal festivals such as the Spiral of Light in December and the Spring Festival in May.
